The book starts with a picture of a main character, Birdy, sitting in the military mental hospital . He is introverted, eccentric , reserved, obsessed with birds and full of dreams about flying and being free. Birdy's doctor, having not a clue about main character's thoughts, asks Birdy's friend Al for help to get Birdy 'down' to the reality. Then we know more about their common childhood and their adventures. We get to know an abusive Al's family and Birdy's obsession with birds. The scenes with canaries are are absolutely amazing. You may actually perceive them as humans or yourself as a bird!! This is just brilliant. Wharton is excellent as always. His way of describing reality is emotional, sensual and touching. If you haven't read anything by Wharton you may start with this one. Strong four stars from me.
